Our graduates will also become able to play an active role in a multicultural and multilingual society both in Japan and abroad. LEIS also supports those who aspire to become researchers. Diploma Policy Towards our goal of developing human resources, a master’s degree in Language Education and Information Science will be awarded to students once they earn the required credits and pass the assessment and final examination of a thesis or a specific research outcome. Then they will be considered to have fulfilled the following educational goals. Educational Goal (All courses) Knowledge: Students will acquire, and further deepen, advanced and specialized knowledge in order to analyze phenomena in their field of specialization. Skill/ability: In all three courses that LEIS offers, students should be able to conduct research of academic or social significance. Mindset: Students should develop a view of language and language culture as a basis for internationality. Students should develop a sense of ethics and responsibility for research and education. Educational Goal (English Language Education Course) Knowledge: Students should develop advanced, specialized knowledge and become able to explain various phenomena, and thereby further deepen their knowledge. Skill/ability: Students should develop advanced and specific English teaching skills which can be applied to any situation, and be adaptable to changing times. Educational Goal (Japanese Language Education Course) Knowledge: Students should develop advanced, specialized knowledge to become able to explain various phenomena, and thereby further deepen their knowledge. Skill/ability: Students should develop advanced, specific Japanese teaching skills which can be applied to any situation, and be adaptable to changing times and diverse educational environments. Educational Goal (Course in Linguistics and Studies of Communication and Expression) Knowledge: Students should develop advanced, specialized knowledge to become able to explain various phenomena in the fields of linguistics (e.g. English studies, Japanese studies and studies of communication and expression), and thereby further deepen their knowledge. Skill/ability: Students should collect appropriate data according to the linguistic phenomena under study, and hone their ability to analyze them. Curriculum Policy To achieve our objectives for human resource development, LEIS has established three courses as the foundation of the curriculum: the English Language Education Course; the Japanese Language Education Course; and the Course in Linguistics and Studies of Communication and Expression. There is a common set of subjects available that students in any course can take. In addition, in each course, there is a set of allocated specialist subjects that match the knowledge and skills set out in the educational goals. There are also subjects that promote the development of research skills and internationality, and others in the common subject group which are useful to any student in LEIS. Admission Policy Applicants who have the necessary language skills to conduct research. Applicants who have the minimum necessary knowledge of English language education, Japanese language education, or linguistics and studies of communication and expression. Applicants will be accepted who have shown themselves capable of conducting research, or who are recognized to have the attributes which will enable them to conduct research in the specialized fields mentioned above. Namely, the ability to identify research topics, logical thinking skills, the ability to organize information, and a desirable attitude and motivation towards academics.
