The theme of the conference was "Local Community Development and the Future of Libraries." Following an opening ceremony, the Library Architecture Award ceremony, and the keynote speech, Hideyuki Morita, representative director of Manabinotane Co., Ltd gave a lecture entitled "Local Community Development and the Future of Libraries: What We Pass on." In the afternoon, participants enjoyed a variety of discussions at fourteen different workshops or viewed the many exhibitions that were held during the conference. The next conference will be held on the 12th and 13th October, 2017, at the National Olympics Memorial Youth Center. Workshop No. 3: School Libraries—Impact of the Revised School Library Act Three reports were given, followed by a discussion session. The first report was by a member of the Conference on Surveys and Research into the Consolidation and Enhancement of School Libraries formed by the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology, about a paper published October 20th, 2016. The second was given by the chair of the School Library Division of the Japan Library Association, about a paper published by the Study Group of School Librarian Personnel Issues. The third was by a member of the School Library Division, about the placement of school librarians. Workshop No. 5: Library Services for Children—Outstanding Library Services for Children in Small Towns This workshop covered case studies of unique library services for children in small towns with populations of less than 50,000. Employees of the Manazuru Public Library in Manazuru-cho, Kanagawa, the Ono Town Museum Library in Onomachi, Fukushima, and the Miyoshi Town Library in Miyoshi-cho, Saitama, reported on their management, services for children, and reading promotion activities. Despite a limited number of employees, these facilities each offer excellent services in cooperation with schools and local government.
