It contains significant works that are helpful in tracing the history of various art trends, ranging from works by artists such as Gustav Klimt, Pablo Picasso, Pierre Bonnard and Max Ernst who were active in the first half of the century, works by influential post-war artists such as American painter Morris Louis, and works by modern Japanese artists who assimilated Western art influences in their own unique ways to works by leading contemporary Japanese artists. The Aichi Prefectural Museum of Art’s collection is further broadened and enriched by 1477 works donated by Fujii Tatsukichi (1881–1964), who played an important role in modernizing Japanese crafts, and the Fujii Tatsukichi research group, and some 3307 works donated by Kimura Teizo (1913–2003), a famous Nagoya art collector, and his family. As well, in 2014, the original video works produced by the Aichi Arts Center on the theme of “the body” were transferred to the Aichi Prefectural Museum of Art, which continues to produce new works (AAC Films). The works in these collections are displayed on a rotational basis at collection exhibitions, which are timed to fit the schedules of special exhibitions.
